Jack was the gun captain of the starboard quad 40mm Mount 44, which was hit by a kamikaze carrying a 500-pound bomb.  As he was being transferred off the Aaron Ward to the LCS 83, he made his last request to Lloyd Boles:  "Tell my mother my body wasn't mangled."  Jack's legs were merely dangling from his body, and he died just hours later.

Lloyd honored his request and visited his parents after the war.
