Chuck, a sonarman, tried to enlist in the
Navy immediately after Pearl Harbor, but was turned down due
to a leg injured while playing football.
Unwilling to take the easy way out, Chuck
worked for 5 months to earn the money necessary to have
surgery on his leg-- and was rewarded by a grateful Uncle
Sam with a draft notice-- for the Army.
At the last moment, Fate intervened and
Chuck was able to volunteer out of the Army and into the
Navy.
