"Aboard ship Lefty...was a tough but fair disciplinarian.  He'd seen action before in the Caribbean, North Africa and Anzio Beach and he wanted all of us to survive "the hell" he knew was coming our way.  In a memo he sent ....on 8 Feb 1945, Lefty said in part:  "Our crew and equipment is as good as you could fine in the Navy today."  ---Lloyd Boles

He was awarded the Bronze Star for gallantry in the battle of 3 May 1945.

He and his wife, Billye, have been married for more than 50 years.
